Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has been suspended by the ICC from the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle because his team was found guilty of a "serious over-rate offence" during the fifth ODI in Colombo on Monday.

Pakistan were found to be three overs short of their target even after time allowances were taken into consideration. Following the defeat that cost them the series 3-1, Misbah pleaded guilty to the charge laid by the umpires and the penalties were accepted without the need for a formal hearing.

"As this was Pakistan's first serious over-rate offence in the past 12 months, Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees handed Misbah two suspension points while each of his players received a 40% fine (10% for each of the first two overs and 20% for the additional over)," the ICC said in a statement, " … the imposition of two suspension points means that Misbah will now miss Pakistan's first Test against Sri Lanka which starts in Galle from Friday, since such suspension points are to be applied to the subsequent international matches in which Misbah is most likely to participate on a chronological basis immediately following the announcement of the decision."

Pakistan had also been fined for a slow over-rate in the opening ODI of the Asia Cup against Bangladesh in Dhaka on March 11, but that was a minor over-rate offence and not a "serious" one.

He is a loser who isnt in good form and his form migh rub on the team and we might end up losing the test!

team bowling second often gets screwed when its a tight match, the rules are really silly. but normally pakistan has another spinner, this time we had 3 fast bowlers and that makes the overs go slower. this is a big blow though. hafeez BETTER NOT be made test captain, he doesn't even warrant a spot in the side right now. this whole captaincy thing has gone to his head just like it does to most people who are appointed pakistan captain.

SL was slow but not getting nething. Which is crazy half the time SL were taking drink breaks at couple of points umpires has to ask SL batsman to move, This is 1st offence of misbah i.e serious offence and he has been suspended so freaking harsh.

But then its chris broad so what else to expect? This guy continues to be bias.

I hope YK is made captain, if hafeez is captain then say goodbye.

On a different topic, if batting woes continue and we lose the test series, should it be time to qts what whatmore brings to the table?

younis must be the captain

from cricinfo after the end of 1st inning: 6.20pm We are 20 minutes over time. Some work for Chris Broad there.

Don't know what the time allowence is, if it is 20 minutes or more then I guess Jawardene is safe.

1.) rules are rules, if 3 overs is a serious offense and the rules say its a ban, then i have no problems with a ban. playing sami instead of ajmal really hurt misbah in more ways than one.

2.) younis khan is the only logical choice for captain. hafeez is a joke and barely warrants a spot in the team team as a bowler.

3.) whatmore has just arrived, he should not be questioned for one year. let the man work. he has a proven track record, and these things take time. mohsin khan wasn't doing a bad job, but now that we've put faith in whatmore, you have to stick with him. he should be given time and space to work and does not need to face a proverbial jury every time we do poorly in a series.

Sure one can question him, but I am not for any drastic changes, give him some time, after all this is only his second assignment as pakistan coach. He is not a magician, and what can he do if our batsmen or fielders do not learn from their mistakes and improve on them.

Regarding whatmore, would be under lot of pressure after white washing eng under mohsin would be shock for fans if we lose test series. Do remember next 3 assignments are not easy. aus series, T20 WC and then zimb and SA. (zimb dun count) so if we lose 3 i can tell u whatmore will be a goner

i can only hope the pcb does not think like you but i'm afraid that they do. whatmore has a 2-year contract. his hired/fired status does not need to be assessed on a series by series basis. before you start pointing out what he's done wrong, and what he might do wrong in the future, keep in mind he won the asia cup in his first job with the team when most people were not expecting us to even make the finals. whatmore is a good coach, and in time, we'll see results. we have to be patient now that we've given him the job over mohsin khan.

3 series loss would be hard to take pcb not pcb

Sorry am happy with asia cup win but wasnt the finest win, the only team that was suppose to be competetive i.e Ind kicked our ass and we almost lose to BD not once but twice, SL even lost to BD, hell ind lost to bd LOL

as far as the Asia cup is concerned whatmore was with the team at that time for just a month so i doubt he brought in his system that hardly that would disrupt the team who were coming off a high of the England whitewash (and the low of the England odi loss too) but if he does lose three series then the PCB will defo consider their options.
i guess it will depend on the nature of the losses too, if we get trampled over then its worrying but if they put up a fight and lose then at least then you know something's are working and other things need working on!

Shit thats not good. Think faisal iqbal will come instead of him, and Younis will be the captain.

Then why dhoni wasnt banned right away, he was given fine and when he breached again in 12 months period then he was banned for 1 test. Also to note it was done in same format for dhoni, a sensible approach would have been ban misbah for 1 ODI instead of test.
