Waqar Younis was my favorite fast bowler of all time. Always has been and always will be.
But that doesn't mean I am equating him with Wasim Akram. I grew up watching Waqar's toe crushing yorkers and all the aggression he brought in the game, it riled up whole Pakistan nation. Back in early 90s when two Ws were on the rise, it was easy to say that Waqar's bowling was the exclamation point. But then Wasim revived and revived like no one else has ever in Cricket. World Cricket hasn't seen a bigger fast bowler than Wasim and it will be really hard to bring another one like him. Waqar, on the other hand become emulation for modern fast bowlers. In every street of Pakistan there was a Waqar Younis. Shoaib Akhtar himself was a Second Waqar Younis of Pakistan Cricket. He said in his book that he brought pace and aggression after following Waqar's bowling.
Waqar has achieved some unique feats which no other fast bowler from any era has ever achieved. Like the ratio of Bowled and LBW among his test and ODI wickets is just phenomenal, no other bowler is even close to that which tells that how much of a individual talent Waqar had compared to any other bowler of his era. His bowling was never dependent, it was truly the exclamation point.
I do agree that there will never be a Wasim Akram, but I haven't seen another Waqar Younis either. This is where I have differences with both Wasim and Waqar that there ego came in the way of new fast bowlers and like Imran Khan prepared these two before leaving, they never prepared their successors.
