Chingoka happy with security
Zimbabwe cricket chairman Peter Chingoka insists everyone travelling on the controversial tour of Pakistan is “comfortable” undertaking the trip.
There have been serious security concerns in Pakistan since the assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto on December 27.
Coach Robin Brown named a familiar 15-man squad on Wednesday as news broke that a suicide bomber had caused deaths in Lahore.
The International Cricket Council have moved next month’s qualifying tournament for the Women’s World Cup to South Africa.
But the Zimbabwe team still plan to leave Harare for Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday en route to Karachi for a five-game one-day series.
Chingoka will accompany the squad during the first leg of the tour.
“We will be touring Pakistan. The players and their technical staff are all comfortable with the tour,” said Chingoka.
He added that they were in constant liaison with the Pakistan Cricket Board over the matter of safety and security in the country.
“I will accompany the team on the first leg of the tour and the vice-chairman, Mr Tavengwa Mukuhlani, will then join the travelling party when I return on the 17th or 18th,” added Chingoka.
“The chairman of the cricket committee, Mr Cyprian Mandenge, will take over from Mr Mukuhlani on the 24th and return with the team.”
Brown’s squad contains all 11 players who featured in the recent 2-1 series defeat to the West Indies, along with leg-spinner Timycen Maruma, seamers Christopher Mpofu and Tawanda Mupariwa and all-rounder Sean Williams, all of whom have previous one-day experience.
Zimbabwe squad: Prosper Utseya (captain), Gary Brent, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura, Keith Dabengwa, Timycen Maruma, Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa, Raymond Price, Vusimuzi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams.

Pakistan ODI Squad against Zim ..
Saturday, January 12, 2008
By our correspondent
KARACHI: Pakistan will announce their ODI squad for a five-match series against visiting Zimbabwe by January 16, a top PCB official said here on Friday.
The official said that the members of the national selection committee will meet in Lahore during a brief training camp to decide the squad for the series getting underway from January 21 in Karachi.
He said that the PCB will name the Patron’s XI squad today (Saturday) for a four-day game against the Zimbabweans scheduled to begin here at the Defence Stadium from January 14. According to the officials the squad will mostly include the top performers of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.
“We will give some of the talented youngsters a chance by fielding them in the four-day match,” said the official. “But the (Patron’s XI) squad will also include two or three senior players because we also want some experienced cricketers to lead the youngsters.”

Zimbabwe: Cricket Team Leaves for Violence-Hit Pakistan
A SUICIDE bomber yesterday blew himself up and killed 22 people in Pakistan as Zimbabwe prepared to leave today for a cricket tour of the violence-torn Asian country.
However, Zimbabwe Cricket chairman Peter Chingoka insisted all the players and officials travelling to Pakistan were "comfortable".
There were doubts that the tour would go ahead due to the violence that has rocked Pakistan since former prime minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on December 27.
Yesterday's blast at the Lahore High Court was the latest in a wave of attacks targeting politicians and security forces ahead of parliamentary elections on February 18.
Because of the volatile situation, the International Cricket Council was forced to move next month's qualifying tournament for the Women's World Cup in which Zimbabwe are participating to South Africa.
However, Chingoka said Zimbabwe would proceed with the tour after getting assurance from the Pakistan Cricket Board over the safety and security situation.
"We will be touring Pakistan. The players and their technical staff are all comfortable with the tour," Chingoka said yesterday.
"I will accompany the team on the first leg of the tour."
The Zimbabwe squad were scheduled to fly from Harare to Johannesburg today en route to Karachi, Pakistan, for the tour which comprises five one-day internationals and opens with a four-day match in Karachi.
Prosper Utseya leads a familiar 15-man squad that includes Raymond Price, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor and Elton Chigumbura.
Since 1992, Zimbabwe and Pakistan have played 35 times, with the Asian giants winning 31 of the encounters.
Zimbabwe have won just two times, while two matches between them were tied.
The two sides last met at Sabina Park in Jamica in a World Cup match last year which Pakistan won by 93 runs.
Zimbabwe squad
Prosper Utseya (captain), Gary Brent, Chamunorwa Chibhabha, Elton Chigumbura, Keith Dabengwa, Timycen Maruma, Hamilton Masakadza, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Christopher Mpofu, Tawanda Mupariwa, Raymond Price, Vusimuzi Sibanda, Tatenda Taibu, Brendan Taylor, Sean Williams.
Fixtures
January 14-17 -- four-day match in Karachi
January 21 -- first ODI, Karachi (Day/Night)
January 24 -- second ODI, Hyderabad
January 27 -- third ODI, Multan (day/night)
January 30 -- fourth ODI, Faisalabad (day/night)
February 2 -- fifth ODI, Sheikhupura.
