No spinner for game against England
Selectors ignore tweakers in India 'A' squad for England game - The Times of India?
Quote:
India's new bunch of selectors, headed by Sandeep Patil, announced a 14-member India 'A' squad to play the tourists in a warmup match from October 30-November 1 in Mumbai that will be void of any spinner.
Promptly enough, watchful tweets from England, notably former England coach David Lloyd's, termed the announcement as "one totally lacking in style and class".
Much to his disappointment though, Lloyd and the touring Englishmen may soon learn that the second warmup match that England are scheduled to play here before the first Test begins - against Mumbai 'A' - will be void of many senior first-class cricketers.
Instead, what is likely to be fielded is an ensemble of Under-25 and Under-19 cricketers for the match, scheduled from November 3-5.
Now, the big question: Will this theory work? England have Graeme Swann at their disposal, the world's best offie at the moment, and playing him in the nets will certainly give them a good advantage.
Times View
The Indian skipper and some other members of the team have made no secret of their desire that India should have turning tracks prepared for Tests at home. They have a fair point when they say there is nothing to be ashamed of in building pitches to suit the home team.
This, however, is carrying the logic a step further. For the selectors to deny the English the chance of playing the spinners who will figure in Team India in the practice game is one thing, but to deny them practice against any spinner at all seems a bit much.
You could argue this is smart tactics, but doesn't this also mean that second string Indian spinners who could have got some useful exposure against a top international side will lose out?
Squad: Suresh Raina (C), Murali Vijay, Ambati Rayudu, Ajinkya Rahane, Yuvraj Singh, Manoj Tiwary, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Irfan Pathan, Vinay Kumar, Parvinder Awana, Ashok Dinda, Robin Bist, Ashok Menaria, Abhinav Mukund.
