Pakistani T20 World Cup Preview & Montage By Talha Syed
“You gotta love Pakistan cricket. All the problems that they have off the field; look at the smiles when their watching cricket – and why wouldn’t you. The talent in this side is unbelievable; they're never out of any game of cricket.” - Nasser Hussain

"Dont' Give Up, Don't Look Down, 'Coz Your Time Is Gonna Come Around"
After a thrilling T20 series win against the Aussies, the next assignment for the men in green is the prestigious T20 World Cup. Having been the only team that has reached the semi-final of all three previous instalments of the event does bring a certain amount of expectation and hope to the Pakistani team & their fans. Let’s just take a moment now to have a quick look at the 15 players who have been selected to carry the hopes & expectations of almost 180 million people.
Mohammad Hafeez (C): With a nick name as ‘The Professor’, it was only a matter of time before a player with so much knowledge about the game lead the team out onto the field. This is Hafeez’s time to shine. It is his chance to show that he can take up the captaincy, and possibly, even lead Team Pakistan into the 2015 ODI World Cup. He’s always been a solid batsman in the line-up – despite his recent slight dip in form – however, in recent years he has developed into a more then handy off spin bowler. There is no doubt that he will give bowlers and batsmen from around the world plenty to think about when they face up against him.
Nasir Jamshed: At the age of 22, Jamshed has had a very strong start to what could be a long a prolific career. With a mixture of innovation and perfect timing Jamshed has a fantastic range of shots that could trouble most bowlers. In the past few months he has played a few sublime knocks – such as his century VS Ind in the Asia cup & his 97 VS Australia in the 2nd ODI – and Pakistani fans will be hoping he will continue this form of his into the T20 world cup.
Shoaib Malik: He has been in an out of the team a lot and controversy never seems to be far from him, however, having said that - there is no doubting Maliks talent on the field. He has plenty of experience to draw from in the T20 format having led Pakistan in the 2007 T20 World Cup & also having led the very successful Sialkot Stallion team in the past. He is more than handy with the bat and can provide vital and sensible knocks whenever the team requires them, as well as run through a few overs with the ball in the middle of the innings. Malik also brings something to the table which most other Pakistani players don’t – and that is an athletic and committed fielder no matter where he is placed.
Raza Hasan: At a brittle age of 20 Raza Hasan is the youngest player in the squad and arguably Pakistans wild card. There has been a lot of buzz and anticipation around the arrival of this young left-arm spin bowler and rightly so as he proved in his international debut T20 VS Australia. Pakistan fans around the world had a smile on their face when they saw this youngster turn the ball wildly in the Under 19 World Cup in New Zealand a few years ago, and now it’s time to see how Hasan gets on in the senior side. Since hid Under 19 days, Raza has earned his call up into the senior T20 side by maintaining a phenomenal average of 12.59 with the ball in domestic T20.
Kamran Akmal: Having recently returned to the Pakistan side after a layoff of almost a year and a half, the senior Akmal brother has a lot to prove to the Pakistani fans. After a very successful SLPL – in which he was the leading run scorer until he had to leave for nation duty – K.Akmal will be looking to continue his form with the bat heading into the T20 World Cup. However, with the wide range of shots that he can play, Kamrans batting has never really been the issue. The thing that most people will be keeping an eye on is how he fears behind the stumps with the gloves on, since he has made ‘a few’ massive mistakes behind the stumps in the past. Here’s hoping that we have seen the last of those mistakes.
Sohail Tanvir: Having burst onto the screen in the 1st edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007 with his windmill-like bowling action Tanvir recently made his return to the national side. In that time he gained a lot of T20 experience internationally and domestically around the globe. He had a very successful IPL 1 in which he was the leading wicket taker of the tournament – which included a 6 wicket haul - and was a vital ingredient for Rajasthan’s success. Pakistani fans will now be hoping that he can continue to bamboozle batsmen with his action and variety with the ball, as he has done in the past, heading into T20 2012.
Yasir Arafat: Arafat is somewhat of a T20 specialist having played over a 140 T20 games around the world for Pakistan & for various domestic teams. He has a great deal of experience to draw from when it comes to this format and has also performed very consistently whenever he has been called upon for national duty. Arafat is a great batsman to having coming in down to order to smash some quick runs and is also a very useful bowler to have in the side. In his recent T20I match VS SL he claimed bowling figures of 3/18 at an econ of 5.4, proving to be a handful for the batsmen particularly at the end of the innings.
Umar Akmal: The junior Akmal brother is arguably one of, if not the most talented batsmen that cricket fans have seen burst on to the screen in recent years. However, many feel that he has not been able to live up to the standards that he should be at. All that could change in T20 2012 however. With a phenomenal training staff being led by Dav Whatmore, and the stage all set for him, Umar Akaml could make this his tournament. There is no doubting the talent that this young man possesses, and with the ability to play shots all around the wicket he could prove to be a nightmare for bowlers and captains from around the world.
Saeed Ajmal: There is no two ways around it – this guy is the best bowler in the world today. With the variety and control that Ajmal has, he has managed to outsmart batsmen from every corner of the globe. Batsmen still struggle to pick his doosra and are still trying to figure out a way to play him. Ajmal had a fantastic T20 2009 and will no doubt be hurting from T20 2010. However, there is no doubt that he will use the bitter experience from the T20 2010 Semi Final to motivate him and try to get revenge by helping Pakistan reclaim the trophy.
Imran Nazir: This little dynamite at the top of Pakistani batting order could prove to be a vital ingredient in a successful campaign in this T20 World Cup. He has not been around the Pakistani side much lately, however there is no doubting the ability that Imran Nazir possesses. He can take the attack to any bowling line up in the initial power play and give his side a great advantage early on if he gets going. Having played almost 90 T20 matches with a SR of approx. 150, Nazir is definitely a match winner on his day.
Mohammad Sami: When he’s good, he is really really god. When he’s bad, he is really really bad. Sami has been in and out of the side a lot & many would feel that this express pace bowler has not achieved as much as he should have with the amount of talent he had. However, here in the T20 2012 he is getting another chance to prove himself. A good tournament here in which he leads his country to victory & and possibly all the bitter past memories could be forgotten. He had a very good BPL & showed good form and temperament when he returned to the national side VS SL earlier this year. Pakistani fans will be hoping that Samis good form continues moving into the T20 World cup.
Asad Shafiq: Many would not see Shafiq as a T20 player; however, fact is that every T20 batting line up needs those 1 or 2 players in the middle who the big hitters can play around. For Pakistan, Shafiq could play the role of that centre stone in the batting line-up that the big hitters play around. Over the past few years Shafiq has proven himself to be a very sensible and stable middle order batsman who has the temperament to stick it out when times get hard. Pakistani fans will be hoping that he could play the kind of role that Misbah and/or Younus played in the 2009 campaign.
Abdul Razzaq: Razzaq seems to have a love hate relationship with the T20 World Cup. In 2007 he quit international cricket and joined the ICL after he was dropped from the Pakistan squad for T20 2007. In 2009 his return to the national side during T20 World Cup, after Arafat picked up an injury, seemed to be the turning point for Pakistan in the tournament as they went on to win the cup. In T20 2010 Razzaq had a quiet tournament in which he averaged 17 with the bat and 41 with the ball. Now the question is – which Razzaq will turn up at T20 2012? With 16 years of international cricketing experience & having played 150 T20 matches Razzaq has a wealth of experience which he can draw from. His consistent nagging length has been known to pick out wickets and more so Pakistani fans will be hoping he returns to his big hitting ways down the order to get some late runs or finish off games for Pakistan.
Umar Gul: The Guldozer is arguably the best T20 bowler to have played the game. He has had a recent dip in form, however, Pakistani fans will be hoping to see him return to his prime at the stage where he made the biggest impact – The T20 World Cup. Guls contribution in a successful campaign in 2009 for Pakistan was invaluable. No Pakistani fan will ever forget his phenomenal bowling figures of 5/6 VS NZ or that breath taking spell at the end of the 2009 T20 Semi Final VS SA. With his toe crushing Yorkers and variations in speed Gul is as lethal as any bowler in the T20 format. Pakistani fans will be hoping to see Gul return to his prime in Sri Lanka.
Shahid Afridi: Love him or hate him – there is no denying the importance that Afridi has to Pakistan’s T20 side. He is arguably the most wanted T20 player in the world today having played domestic T20 cricket in Pakistan, India, England, Australia, Bangladesh, Sri Lank and South Africa. He seems to be the complete T20 package being able to pick up economical wickets with the ball, being able to smash any bowling line up around the ground on his day and even field in the most important of positions. His contributions in the Semifinal & Final of the T20 2009 were exactly what Pakistan needed to cross the finishing line. Fans will be hoping that the same Afridi turns up again this year and leads the country to T20 glory one more time.
As Nasser Hussain said:
“You gotta love Pakistan cricket. All the problems that they have off the field; look at the smiles when their watching cricket – and why wouldn’t you. The talent in this side is unbelievable; their never out of any game of cricket.”
The passion of Pakistani fans & the talent of Pakistani players is unmatchable by anyone else. Here’s hoping to see a repeat of 2009. A repeat of the Pakistani captain bringing the team together and leading them to the cup. A repeat of Pakistani bowlers bowling unplayable Yorkers, doosras and googlies. A repeat of a Pakistani batsman standing arms aloft in the middle of the stadium after hitting the winning runs in the final of the 2012 T20 World Cup.
As a passionate fan since the age of 5 I would only have the following few words to say to these 15 men on behalf of Pakistanis from around the world:
Play every single game as if it is the last game that you will play for Pakistan. Leave everything you have on that field every time you step out on that pitch. The prayers of millions upon millions of Pakistanis from around the world are behind you & now it is your turn to put in the hard work and determination. Don’t ever forget, even for a single second, what you are playing for and what you are representing. Never ever forget that shiny yellow star printed on your chest with the word “Pakistan” written across it. As long as you do that and play every single ball of every single match with a 100% commitment there is no body who can, or will, ask for anything more from you – just leave the rest up to the almighty Allah.

Not sure if these are the words of encouragement or you are trying to thank them for finally announcing retirement because Pakistani players usually play their last game when they are at the brink of getting ass kicked with humiliation as their geriatric age does not support anymore cricket.

lol yar ... dil pe mat low ... it was only a lame attempt at humor.
So far as Talha's post goes,,,,, bas thik he hai, guzara karti hai ... T20 championship hai koi itnee bhi khaas cheez nahi k insaan itna serious hojaey.
Test championship hoti ya at least ODI WC tou kuch baat bhi thi. This is the crappiest form of cricket and the only the team that's good at playing the best 'tulla maari' will win.

If Pakistan wants to win the T 20 world cup then they should play with Unity, Faith & Discipline. If any of the one goes missing then only loss will be waiting for Pakistan team at the end of the road.
New plan & strategy is required for all the matches.
