KARACHI: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Akram as the new bowling coach for the national team, PakPassion.net reported.

“After much debate and discussions the PCB has chosen Mohammad Akram as the Pakistan bowling coach. The PCB chose Akram as he has a good rapport with the current group of Pakistani cricketers, they know him and he has experience of Pakistan domestic cricket and also a lot of experience in county cricket,” a source close the PCB was quoted as saying.

Akram, who was backed by Rashid Latif and Azhar Mehmood, will also work with the younger players in order to groom them for the future.

“Akram will not just work with the current group of international bowlers, he will also be expected to work with the upcoming bowlers at the National Cricket Academy as well as at grass roots levels with a particular emphasis on grooming and preparing the next generation of fast bowlers for Pakistan,” the source added.

The former fast bowler played 32 matches for Pakistan and county cricket for Surrey, Sussex, Northamptonshire and Essex and is expected to start coaching by next month. Akhtar will work with coach Dav Whatmore and fielding coach Julien Fountain.

Earlier, it was reported that Ian Pont was being considered for the position and former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar had also expressed an interest in becoming the team’s next bowling coach.

has he actually done a coaching course or something, cz that was the basis they declined akhter's offer, i was thinking maybe a gora was coming in or something!

Why the effe!!! We always pick the CRAPY players who had never impress in any Department of the sports I mean this guy was NO where Near A Pakistan's A or even B catagory Bowler not to take away anything that he had played an international cricket but SAMI also play at test level and had played as many matches as WAQAR YOUNIS then what are we going to pick him for a coaching Role!!!
He had worked in SA cricket at domestic level but what did he really do there ?
GOD knows when the f***k are we going to stop the experiments!!!

I think this is good ...since Wasim Akram is very busy himself. ECB has even used his bowling action as text book guideline for prospective fastbowlers in england.

Maybe form time to time Mohammed Akram can perhaps invite Wasim Akram for one week net sessions as well ??

I don’t know what good PCB saw in Mohammed Akram it was yet another case of having good contacts in PCB & friends of PCB who helped him to get the job. In my opinion he is not going to do a good job & he is just another jobber. >>

Ian Pont should had been selected as the bowling coach he would had been outstanding or if was not to be selected as a coach then Shoaib Akhtar would had been a fine option he would had been way better then Mohammed Akram. But it’s like I said this is just another case of having good friends & contacts in the PCB.
