You beauty: Younis Khan's catch of year sparks NSW collapse
Naraaye Takbeer ALLAH HU AKBAR
Quote:
THE most spectacular catch of the year derailed the train that is David Warner and led to a shambolic NSW batting collapse at the SCG last night, sending a harpoon through their faint finals hopes.
Pakistani import Younus Khan defied sense and gravity with his jaw-dropping effort to send Warner back to the sheds in the seventh over of the run-chase, when the opener had threatened to reel in South Australia's total of 5-285 within 40 overs.
As usual, Warner took to the bowlers like an agitated axeman from the start, blasting Shaun Tait to all areas of the ground including an unbelievable pull through mid-wicket for six on a decent-length delivery. But he was duped by a Tait slower ball which he skied over mid-on where Khan was stationed.
Khan sprinted backwards as the ball climbed, but he seemed to lose its position in the setting sun. At the last moment, Khan regained sight of the ball but had overstepped his mark and was forced to halt as it dropped behind his shoulder, spinning 180 degrees in mid-air and grabbing the catch. The wicket left NSW at 3-43 and from there, the Redbacks played like they had removed the head of Voltron, sweeping through the remaining batsmen to dismiss the Blues for just 112, their heaviest defeat of the season so far.
Khan also ran out Blues skipper Dominic Thornely with a direct hit to put a cherry on top of his sweet day, which included a 128-run partnership with NSW discard Tom Cooper for the Redbacks' second wicket.
