Also Pakistan - what our country used to be like

And so we move on with our series of ‘Also Pakistan’. Travelling from Also Pakistan, zigzagging across Also Pakistan-II and Also Pakistan-III we finally conclude with this final feature in the series.
It was an effort that with the help of painstakingly researched and collected images, tried to capture a Pakistan that now seems like a different planet compared to what it has been ever since the 1980s.
A strange, alien place that was also called Pakistan.

A 1955 bottle of Pakola. Every Pakistani knows about Pakola Ice-Cream Soda. The bright green coloured soft-drink that is also hailed (unofficially, though) to be ‘Pakistan’s national soft-drink.’
But for the first few years Pakola struggled to find a market for itself that was packed with popular soft-drinks such as Coca-Cola, 7Up and Bubble-Up.
Then in 1955 it even had to print the words ‘Non-Alcoholic’ on its bottles because thanks to its striking colour, some stores (in Karachi) actually began storing it alongside their stock of alcoholic beverages!
By the 1970s however, Pakola finally established itself as a popular soft-drink.

A 1967 image of the American Embassy in Karachi. It was one of the most recognisable buildings in Karachi’s Abdullah Haroon Road area.
Built in 1958, the Embassy, apart from handling the visa issuing operations, also had a large library.
As can be seen in the picture, it hardly had any barriers or security and its doors were open to all.
However, from the late 1980s onwards, when Islamist violence began to rise within Pakistan, the Embassy was fortified by a tall wall.
Later, especially after the tragic 9/11 event and after the building faced at least three terror attacks in the 2000s, the walls were thickened, barriers placed and security tightened.
The library that was hugely popular with Karachi’s school and collage students was closed and the visa section was moved to Islamabad.
In 2011, the building was abandoned and the Embassy was moved to a different location in Karachi. The building still stands, though.

pakistan used to be quite progressive it seems back in those days. i guess with the deaths of those great scholars and the rise of zia, pak lost that sense of progressiveness.

seems like this was decades ago, but it's just since 1980. so sad. this is what happens when the majority is silent, and there is a violent minority with an agenda.

We should all just become like you. Forget our moral and religious values for a world you will soon leave. Hey i say if you want to live in the dark be my guest. Don't pull others in there with you. keep your ideas to yourself. Know that you have a free mind and live happily and merry until you die. Then after that try to use 1 thing from this duniya and see where you stand.

Like cyborg said, do whatever you want. Nobody cares. Stopping coming out and telling people what to do. In pakistan 80 percent want to be ruled by the Shariah. That is 8 out of 10 people. My question is why are the 2 people stopping us from doing this. That is people like you. So i would lay low if i was you. Your being run out. This is the problem i have. We actually care about the 2 people. I say the hech with them. Leken that is just me. If it were up to me I would have people like you crying.

You are factually incorrect my friend. If 8 out of 10 people were so in favor of it, Pakistan's political system would have been overturned by now. We would have been ruled over by "KATH MULLAYS" instead of democracy and political parties. The max Kath Mullays get was under Zia's regime (which essentially IMO was the cultural murder of Pakistan). After that we had 2002 election where Kath Mullay supported MMA, but still cannot gather enough support to beat two of the bigger liberal parties in Pakistan.

Then I would say get a grip on history. This country you claim so much to be your today, was not made for Mullahs. There was no contribution of Mullahs and religious parties in it's formation, heck those parties weren't even favor of partition of subcontinent. Where the heck you come from and lay claim on this country. This country was made for muslims, not fascist. And I think before you'll be able to fulfill your wish of making so called 2 people cry out of 10, I hope someone throw you in Afghanistan where you'll find a better match of your mindset. Stay happy there.

Pakistan flag has a "white" region in it as well. Try to understand it's importance, there is a reason it was made like that. I feel sorry for people like you who have opinion of leaving your own people crying, if you had your way. What a shameful predicament.

sorry sir, it's the other way around in Pakistan. Oppressor cannot be portrayed as oppressed. No matter how much you play the victim card, it's not going to change the reality.

The max Kath Mullays get was under Zia's regime (which essentially IMO was the cultural murder of Pakistan). After that we had 2002 election where Kath Mullay supported MMA, but still cannot gather enough support to beat two of the bigger liberal parties in Pakistan.

The I would say get a grip on history.

So anyone who wants to practice islam/ want to implement it in a country automatically get's labeled mullah? this is ridiculous , normal people also want this not only mullahs. I am no mullah and i want this.
