Audio slideshow: A surgeon in Somalia
Somali has known little but warfare for the past two decades, leaving the healthcare system in ruins at a time when it is most needed.
Dr Omar Saleh, a surgeon working for the World Health Organization, says many of his patients had never seen a doctor before he and his team arrive.
The inaccessible coastal town of Ras Kamboni had not seen any foreign assistance or development aid for the last 15 years. After the Kenyan army ousted Islamist militants from the town last year, Dr Saleh was able to set up a clinic offering treatment to a community desperately in need of medical care.
