Electricity shortfall in the country reaches 8,500 MW

LAHORE: Pakistan’s electricity shortfall reached its peak as the difference in the supply and demand of power hit 8,500 MW on Sunday, DawnNews reported.

According to the National Transmission & Despatch Company (NTDC), Orient, Hubco, Saif, Lal pir, Sapphire and other power plants have stopped producing power due to the unavailability of oil and gas.

Lahore, Kasur, Muridke and Bhai Pheru are the worst affected cities due to the increase in shortfall. Power outages, which lasted as long as 20 hours, were also recorded in Faisalabad and Gujranwala.

Lahore has been facing three to four hours of loadshedding after every hour.

Currently, 4252 MW, 1300 MW and 4643 MW of electricity is produced with hydel, thermal and private producers respectively. KESC is receiving 680 MW of electricity.

Various parts of Rawalpindi also remained without electricity since morning. Many areas are also facing water shortages due to loadshedding.

Angry protestors had come out on the streets of Lahore Sunday after facing prolonged loadshedding.

A large demonstration was held against the electricity situation in Lahore’s Garhi Shahu area where protestors blocked traffic and burnt tyres. They also chanted slogans against Wapda and the government and asked for urgent measures to be taken against the prolonged and unannounced power outages as well as the lack of water available.

so friggin sad, every year it is the same BS. now if there are floods again in august/september, i'm sure the government will be unprepared as ever to tackle them. seriously makes you wonder what the hell these ministers do all day instead of tackling the problems they were elected to tackle.

Pakistan should invest in solar and wind. ONLY way you can create energy. Energy does not fall from the sky. You convert from one form to the other.

You have to move to wind and solar. ONLY solution. Can't say it's inefficient or costs too much or produces to little. This is the only solution to produce your energy.

These are the only two types of energies that private companies can - and already have - started producing. Pak gov should invest in this, could boost the economy as well.

Google pakistani solar to learn more. It's exciting stuff.

Solar electricity projects are nothing new, civic centre karachi use to have solar lights, heck we even built a model village on solar electricity in 80's there was also great drive to have bioelectricity and push to have it implemented in villages. NED students in 80's built themselves a solar car.

So all these were already there qts is since we have all that in 80's why in God name after 20 plus yrs we still trying to start from scratch

i tend to disagree, massive grid or dam building always involved govt the traditional ways of producing electricity. Take the movement for switching solar panels, govt has to get involved, as it is huge tax breaks, subsidies and massive cash influx is required by state to make solar energy feasible.

I for one believe this is the job of govt, i dun believe in pvt companies running power companies, California is a great example, dergulation of power companies has only brought headache. But thast my opinion i kinda believe Govt has to do these things u dun have to agree and thats philosiphical debate with no end in sight.

So lets stick with the topic, take pakistan e.g to make switch to solar and wind, govt has to be involved, if not owning companies then providing land, tax breaks and subsidy to pvt companies to make it feasible, furthermore give subsidy to public to make them switch to green eneregy and after spending all this money (tax payers) and time (tax payers) they have to show something in return hence they have to have pvt-govt partnership. That my dear freind is a fact and the way things work.
