Head of state - Muslim or otherwise

Ok...I have given this a lot of thought....before I started this thread...and i hope it does not denigrate into another slanging match. My request to all participants would be, if you cannot respect the guy arguing with you and you have to go ad hominem, just don't view the thread. Thanks.

Now, I was wondering given the kinda system of government we have, is it fair for us to automatically disqualify a non-Muslim from the highest echelons of power? If there is a young Hindu, Christian, Rastafarian (yeah yeah I know but I can dream ) kid out there who is smart, vibrant, enthusiastic and honest, is it fair to him/her that they already know the ceiling of what their achievement can be? I am not necessarily talking about social inequalities but something that is written into law and whether you feel that is inequitable? I feel it is. The thing that pricked my curiosity was this following video.

Again kindly share your opinion, and please try to keep it constructive and civil.

well, i think ideally it should not matter what your religion is, only how qualified you are to lead the country. but we all know that in pakistan qualifications count for very little. it's easy to argue that there is little that is islamic about our current leadership, yet they are permitted to lead because they are technically muslims. but really i don't think this is unique to pakistan. even in the US, someone who is not a christian has no hope of running for president and getting anywhere, and this is supposed to be the premiere democracy in the world today. so it's not a problem unique to us.

no no...i absolutely agree with that, I am just saying hardwiring it into the constitution is maybe something that could be looked at?

I have this debate with my family and friends all the time..

About the explicit religious discrimination embedded into the Pakistan constitution itself, with the clause such as that, and the exclusivity and specifity that Islam has in the blasphemy clause in the criminal code too, when other religions don't get the specific mentions that Islam does in that particular aspect..

If that isn't state endorsed discrimination based purely on religion, I don't know what is.
It instantly marginalizes non-Muslims....

Or at least pretending to be Christian!
I know I'm side tracking, but there's no way for a minute I believe Barack Obama is actually a believer if one reads his writings, or speeches.. especially prior to taking office!
