Infected Australian Sheep Unloaded In Karachi
Infected Australian sheep unloaded in Karachi
KARACHI: Australian sheep infected with scabby mouth disease have made their way into the metropolis.
Approximately 75,000 sheep departed from Australia on board the Fremantle-based Wellard Rural Exports ship Ocean Drover. Their destination was countries in the Middle East. 53,000 sheep were offloaded in Qatar and Oman, while the remaining 22,000 were to be transported to Bahrain.
However when the Ocean Drover arrived in Bahrain on August 29 it was asked to leave its berth until matters were resolved. It was here that concerns were raised in regards to the sheep being infected with scabby mouth disease.
The ship remained in the waters of Bahrain for 14 days and the sheep were not allowed to be unloaded. According to standard rules, the ship should have returned to Australia, however its next destination was a city which was not even part of its original route.
The Ocean Drover docked in Port Qasim, Karachi on Tuesday night. The 22,000 sheep were offloaded and handed over to an unknown buyer.
This scandal was covered by international newspapers however Pakistani authorities failed to take any action.

Babar Ghauri orders probe into Australian sheep scandal
ISLAMABAD: Federal Minster for Ports and Shipping Babar Ghauri has ordered an investigation into how Australian sheep infected with scabby mouth disease were allowed to be unloaded in Karachi.
DG Ports and Shipping will head the inquiry and has been directed by Ghauri to submit a report within three days.
The decision by the Federal Minister came after Geo News highlighted that an Australian ship had unloaded 22,000 sheep at Port Qasim, Karachi.
The ship which was not even scheduled to travel to Pakistan unloaded the infected sheep in the country because it was not allowed to do so in Bahrain which was its original destination.
Authorities in Bahrain had discovered traces of scabby mouth disease and had refused the ship to unload the sheep. Prior to Bahrain 53,000 sheep were unloaded in Qatar and Oman.

Labs confirm imported Australian sheep infected: officials
KARACHI: Sindh livestock authorities Saturday confirmed the consumption of the sheep imported from Australia was injurious for health, Geo News reported.
According to officials, random blood and mouth tissue samples of the sheep have tested positive for the disease.
“The veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Islamabad an Tando Jam tested the blood samples of at least 80 sheep and the mouth tissue of nine of them”, an official added.
The authorities have warned the contagion was infecting other cattle as well, which could lead to an outbreak of the disease.

Infected Australian sheep to be disposed of
KARCHI: Commissioner Karachi, Roshan Ali Shaikh has ordered the culling and disposing of about 21,268 diseased Australia sheep imported from Bahrain, Geo News reported.
Talking to Geo News, Roshan Ali Shaikh said that the livestock department of Sindh has been directed to start the disposal operation, which might take more than one day.
He said in the first phase the veterinarians would administer lethal injections to all the sheep so that they could be killed humanely and in the second the carcasses would be dumped in a mass grave.
“Heavy earthmoving machinery to dig up a big dump is on its way to the farm where the sheep have been corralled”, he said.
Earlier on Saturday, the Sindh livestock authorities confirmed the consumption of the sheep imported from Australia was injurious to health.
According to officials, random testing validated Australian Merino sheep were infected.
“The veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Islamabad an Tando Jam tested the blood samples of at least 80 sheep and the saliva of nine of them”, an official added.
"The samples from the sheep tested positive for 100 percent presence of salmonella and actinomyces, a couple of pathogens", officials added further.
They also tested positive for 44 percent E. Coli, a species of bacterium, which could be highly pathogenic.
Last week, the livestock department had sealed the farm where Australian sheep believed to be infected with a contagious disease are being kept.
A total of near 22,000 infected Australian sheep were unloaded at Port Qasim on September 13.
