PESHAWAR: Gunmen pulled 20 Shia Muslims from a bus and killed them at point blank range in Pakistan on Thursday, the third such incident in six months, officials said.

The incident happened in the northwestern district of Mansehra as the bus was travelling between Rawalpindi and the northern city of Gilgit.

Officials said it was ambushed in the hills of Babusar Top, around 100 miles north of Islamabad, although they differed over details of the incident.

“Ten to 12 people stopped the bus and forced some people off the bus,” said Khalid Omarzai, administration chief in Mansehra.

“After checking their papers, they opened fire and at least 20 people are reported to have been killed. This is initial information and the final toll may go up. They are all Shias,” he said.

Local police official Shafiq Gul told AFP that the gunmen were masked, but said the victims were pulled from three separate vehicles in the district, which neighbours the Swat valley.

“They stopped three vehicles, searched them and picked up people in three batches of five, six and nine and shot them dead. They were all Shias,” he said.

Sectarian violence linked to Gilgit, a popular tourist destination for wealthy Pakistanis and expatriates who live in the country, has increased in recent months.

It is the capital of Pakistan’s far northern Gilgit-Baltistan region and is popular with mountaineers as a gateway to the Karakoram and Himalayan mountain ranges.

On February 28, gunmen hauled 18 Shia Muslim men off buses travelling from Rawalpindi to Gilgit in the northern district of Kohistan, shooting them dead.

On April 3, a mob dragged nine Shia Muslims from buses and also shot them dead in the town of Chilas, about 60 miles south of Gilgit.

wtf is wrong with pakistan, no one is coming out talking about the ethnic cleansing that is happening with the people of hazara and Gilgit Baltistan. this is a totally effed up situation and the government is not taking it seriously!
thousands of people have been killed in incident like this in the past couple of years and the govt. the supreme court (that takes a suo moto notice even when a dog shits in a park now) top leaders including imran khan etc are quite and are behaving like it is not happening!

they talk about a prosperous pakistan but it cannot happen when muslims are killing other muslims just because they follow a different sect!

This is why the Army needs to control northern regions. Get rid of the Taliban and all these other groups once and for all. F everyone who is oppose to it.

Going with all gun blazing will only cause us to lose more army personnel, Army been doing operations 4 how long in all over south waziristan? How many we have lost so far? Really our bright young officers and jawan being killed we 1st need to seal the border so they cant escape. Without sealing the border all is useless

no you are wrong. this is not the right strategy. people are expendable, you cannot win this war by defeating the people. you have to defeat the IDEA. otherwise it is a self-fulfilling prophesy. you kill 10 ttp, 50 more will emerge, ready to die in the name of Islam and its promised rewards by killing infidels. the only way to truly win is to adopt a softer, more tolerant version of islam in pakistan. you have written post after post about why ahmadis are non-muslims, just like that 50% of people in pakistan will go on and on about how shias are non-muslims. the shias themselves think sunnis are non-muslim. everyone is so damn worked up about who is or is not a muslim, and then this is the end result, people taking the law into their own hands and enforcing mob justice. this is wrong, and it needs to stop NOW.

no you are wrong. You can't change Islam because it is not fitting your lifestyle. You have to take it for what it is leave it or accept it. This is how the christians lost there way, with this kind of thinking.

First of all we I don't think anyone of us here is knowledgeable enough to comment about Islam in such details. If you don't know anything 100% don't comment about it. Don't guess anything or try to make sense of it.
Forget about Taliban for a sec and think about what's happening in Karachi. Surely it's not Taliban driven, so why can't we eradicate that virus?

I agree with you on killing the idea now tell me how? See thats where you are wrong when u want to make halal what is haram and call it tolerance. Now u wana beat the idea you either come with better idea and convince enough ppl or u use the ideology that is causing the problem and harness it in such way that it becomes beneficial. But it wont succeed, cuz ur definition of tolerance and mine doesn't even match and we both been exposed to west for considerable time with both being educated in west and despite all the rhetoric are willing to exchange ideas and don't feel the need to take out gun and shoot each other, yet we both donot agree then how the uneducated masses would be convinced enuff to change the ideology?
