That propaganda accusation is quite ridiculous since the original report was published on a Pakistani news website. Check the date.

Another temple is no more

By Our Staff Reporter

LAHORE, May 27: In violation of its own scheme for management and disposal of urban evacuee properties, the Evacuee Trust Property Board (EPTB) has allowed a jeweller to demolish a Hindu temple and construct a commercial building in its place at Wachhowali in Rang Mahal.

The EPTB Scheme for Management and Disposal of Urban Evacuee Trust Properties, 1977, categorically prohibits the sale or demolition of an evacuee trust property which is ‘part of appurtenance to a shrine, a religious place or a building of historical or architectural importance’.

Wachhowali, a narrow commercial and residential lane reached through Sooha Bazar and Chhatta Bazaar, is to Lahore what Katas is to Pakistan because of the presence of several Hindu temples, which are managed and maintained by the EPTB.

Each temple is rented out by the EPTB to several tenants for residential as well as commercial purposes. None of the temples located in Wachhowali and maintained by the EPTB is in good shape. However, this is for the first time since its establishment that the board has allowed demolition of a worship place and approved the construction of a commercial building in its place.

The Krishna Mandir, where the influential jeweller has been allowed to build a commercial plaza, was probably the only Hindu temple which still had remnants of a place of worship. This no longer is the case because the entire building, except a small portion facing the Wachhowali lane, has already been brought down by the developer.

One of the 16 former tenants of the temple told Dawn last week that the board had approved the demolition of the structure and the construction of a commercial building in its place about a year or more ago. “We were evicted from the temple some six months back,” he said. The tenants protested against the decision, but later accepted it, fearing the “use of muscle” by the developer.

When a Dawn photographer visited the place early this week to take pictures of whatever was left of the temple, he was immediately surrounded by the henchmen of the developer. “Leave this place,” they told him. “This is private property. We have invested millions of rupees. It has nothing to do with the EPTB. There was no Hindu temple here. If you are looking for a temple, go look a little farther,” they told him when he insisted on taking a picture of the remnants of the temple.

It is not yet clear as to under which law or rule the EPTB has sold the property and approved the demolition of the temple. When contacted on telephone for comments, the EPTB deputy administrator-I, Lahore, Wahab Gull refused to talk on the issue, saying: “If you want to talk about the temple, call the administrator.”

The EPTB administrator Javed Bashir, however, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts as, his staff said, he was out of the office. Nor did he return the call.

It is pertinent to mention that more than a decade ago, the main, wooden gate of the temple was stolen. However, a well-known socialite returned the door after the matter was raised in newspapers. The door is said to be rotting in one of the offices of the EPTB.

It may also be recalled that an 11-marla evacuee trust property inside Yakki Gate has been encroached upon by a developer and a market built on the premises in connivance with the officials of the board.

^why don't you concern yourself with your own poverty stricken nation really to murder one another over religion! Everyday Masjid's are in one way or another damaged or disturbed in bhindia.

My indian friend told me that one time they were at a funeral. At the masjid was the prayer praying and the people beside the masjid starting playing loud music on purpose; some people after the prayer went to there house and told them that during prayers could you please bring the volume down (not even turn it off)? You know what they did? Spit in his face and told him to, and quote, "go back to Pakistan".

This is the haalath of Muslims in Bindistan...I could only imagine the plight of other minorities.

Your talking about one OLD hindu temple which is being destoryed; last I heard this temple is just about ready to fall. There is no chance in hell it can remain standing; it's impossible...but this is what I have been told. If I'm wrong please fill me in.

All Im saying is that this is OUR issue...issues of PAKISTANIS not bloody indian monkeys. Why don't you go fix your own bloody hellstricken nation before talking about a country which TRULY has religous tolerance. I don't remember bhindia ever investing in money to fis every Sikh Temple in it's country! Go ahead and google it. Pakistan as pledged to renovate every major Sikh Gurdwara and Hindu Temple's across the country.

Perhaps it is not difficult to understand the the mosque demolished in Ayodhya was done by mob of Hindu fundamentalist, backed by Govt. of India. The extremists did not gather and ran down the structure in one day rather they openly disclosed their intensions and Govt did nothing to deploy army and install security for the safety and failed intentionally to protect the mosque. The matter does not end here, these hardliners not only demolished the mosques rather they intended and fulfilled their desired to replace it with a temple.

Now if my dear Indian friends read the message carefully and just tell us which of the event, in real, displayed the actual extremism? And whom shall we label as extremists and fundamentalist?

Beside, Lahore high court has stayed the construction....

Pakistan denies reports of demolition of Krishna temple

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has denied reports that the Krishna Mandir in Lahore had been demolished to pave the way for the construction of a shopping mall.

Minister for Religious Affairs Ejazul Haq rejected BJP leader L.K. Advani's statement on the demolition and challenged his remarks that minorities in Pakistan did not have religious freedom.

"Perfect condition"

``The Krishna Mandir is in perfect condition. I invite L.K. Advani to visit Lahore and pray at the temple," Daily Times quoted Mr. Haq as telling reporters on Thursday during a visit to the temple.

He said Rs. 7,00,000 was spent on the renovation of the temple a few months ago, adding that such statements by Indian leaders could affect the ongoing peace process between the two countries.

Supports statement

Krishna Mandir supervisor Pandit Kashi Ram, who was with the minister, supported Mr. Haq's statement and said the government was spending money on the temple's renovation.

He added that the government gave Rs. 10,000 for holy festivals including Diwali, Dusshera and Holi observed at the temple. Evacuee Property Trust Board (EPTB) chairman Lt Gen (Retd.) Zulfikar Ali Khan also said the temple had not been demolished.

I don't get one thing in this matter. At one hand the religious minister is saying that the Mandir was never marked for destruction in the first place on the other hand the Lahore highcourt has stayed the destruction of the Mandir....Both of these actions contradict each other...So whose speaking the truth?

Saad,

Court can issue stay order on any action or intended action. Even if it was marked for demolition, court has summoned its verdict and govt. is bound to obey.

Nah! Thats not my point. I'm just pointing out that at one hand the religious minister is saying that the mandir was never marked for destruction. Now if that's the truth, destruction of which place is stayed by the Lahore highcourt? So did the minister lie or the Lahore highcourt has no idea which place was marked for destruction?

Well this issue is mostly taken up and projected by websites of Indian origin. Pakistan denies right from the beginning that there was any such demolition occured. Rather its been clearly stated by the official person that the location meant for the construction of plaza is far away from the actual temple. In any case if a person has fear of demolition, he/she can refer to court and court can issue stay notice, meaning that the property is disputed and access and amendments aren’t allowed with the consent of the court, which actually happened in this case.

May be the minister is trying to cover-up the uninformed calamity just to avoid becoming an issue but one thing is certain that even the petitioners didn’t complained against the govt. siding or aiding the process of pulling down.
