Pakistan facing 'disaster,' says Imran Khan

Former Pakistan cricketer and politician Imran Khan delivers a speech on the future of democracy in Pakistan at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Khan warned Thursday that Pakistan is heading for "disaster" and lacks any plan to get through its current

LONDON (AFP) — Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan warned Thursday that Pakistan is heading for "disaster" and lacks any plan to get through its current economic crisis.

Khan, chair of the Pakistan Movement for Justice, added there was "no victory" in sight for US-led forces fighting in Afghanistan and threw his weight behind Barack Obama and Joe Biden in the US presidential election.

"I go as far as to say that where Pakistan stands today, we cannot go on as we have been going on," Khan told the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) think-tank in London.

"Unless we change, we are heading towards a disaster. The only way we can change is if we have an independent judiciary checking the abuse of power."

He added: "We have muddled through and always somehow we felt that Pakistan was going to get out of the crises it faced. This time the reason it's different is that never have we had such an economic crisis."

Khan added there was "no strategy" for tackling the problems, adding: "No-one knows how we are going to get out of this."

Pakistan has held discussions with the International Monetary Fund and needs up to 4.5 billion dollars (3.5 billion euros) in the next month to deal with a balance of payments crisis.

Khan also predicted more suicide bombings in Pakistan following a devastating attack at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad last month which killed at least 60 people.

He warned that the US, which has faced controversy over its aerial attacks in Pakistan's tribal areas in pursuit of suspected militants, was failing to win hearts and minds in his country.

"Unless there's a change of strategy, in my opinion there's no victory in sight for the US," he said, calling for dialogue with militants.

"Certainly the biggest casualty out of this is going to be Pakistan... (We are) heading the way Cambodia did during the Vietnam war where Cambodia was accused of sending in insurgents and Cambodia was bombed, destablised and you had the killing fields there."

Backing the Democrat Obama-Biden ticket, he expressed strong admiration for the vice-presidential candidate and described the pairing as "much more suitable" than Republicans John McCain and Sarah Palin.

My sentiments exactly..

TBH, he has more charisma than any of our current leaders and there is NO need for him to be a 'lutera' like the other leaders ...

As I have been saying for quite some time now.... we never deserved freedom. Call it, democracy, martial law, emergency, elected officials, dictators, molvies, chores, haram khores, talibans, WHATEVER !! we just don't know how to run our country.
Not everyone can become the boss,,, there always has to be a few who are bound to take orders... and this nation is one of those.......
we never knew how to run this train thats bound for a "bottomless abyss".

Imran Khan is an intelligent man but he has to realize that when he had the opportunity to be the PM when Musharrad offered it to him, he should have taken it there and then and then try to get things right in Pakistan..He is never going to win a fair election specially in Pakistan cuz Party loyalty is very important in Pakistan..whole Punjab is most likely going to vote for PML N and whole of Sindh is going to vote for PPP and thats just the way it is..never gonna change..
He declined the offer then cuz he did not agree with Musharraf's policies laikin kabhi kabhi kuch kharab ko theek karnay k liye aik ghalat kaam karna parta hai which he should have done to get into that system and could have changed the system with his influence...but he stood by his belief which I respect but he lost his chance..I admired him that he boycotted the elections but it only harmed him as he only had one seat before and now he ha none..he does not have a say in anything..

He was given the opportunity to be the prime minister, serve the people and the country. He refused. He knows well that he will never be able to win enough seats to have a say in how our country is run. He chose to be a spectator. Shame on him. He could have done so much but he chose to sit with Qazi. He needs to just shut up. You have to be a participant to change anything. He chose to to be a spectator. Shame on you Imran.

You could have been our prime minister in 2003. If you had put country's interest first than your principles ( i don't like the dictators ), you still could be the prime minister and mush our president and could have avoided the disaster that our country is facing.
