Pakistan needs 159 years to catch up with industrialised
KARACHI: A World Bank body has said that Pakistan need 159 years to catch up with the industrialised nations of the world, and that the country could reach this milestone by 2050 if it maintained an annual growth rate of 8.3 per cent, and in 2100 if it maintained a growth rate of 4.9 per cent.
It said during the last 10 years Pakistan has maintained the maximum growth rate of 4.8 with an average of 1.8 per year, and that its per capita GDP in 2006 was 2206 dollars.
According to it, India with a per capita GDP of 3308 dollars can catch up with industrialised nations in 50 years. During the last 10 years, India had the maximum growth rate of 7.7 per cent, with an average of 4.9 per cent, the Dawn quoted the report as saying.
The report, prepared by the Commission on Growth and Development noted that China, which in 2006 had per capita GDP of 6621 dollars, can catch up with industrialised countries in 23 years.
The Commission is based at the World Bank headquarters in Washington.
During the last 10 years, China has had an average growth rate of 8.3 per cent, with a maximum of 10.1 per cent.
The report further said that among the Muslim nations, Malaysia was the closest to catch up with industrialised nations, as it can reach this milestone in 35 years, followed by Iran, which can reach there in 54 years. Egypt needed 118 years, it added.

This report is false. Pakistans GDP/capita at PPP is $2,754 and Indias is $2,886.
BUT we are better than them at a lot of things. We have lower malnutrion rates and we're only getting better. We have higher life expectancy I believe. We have one of the lowest HIV/AIDS rates in the world whereas India has the most people with HIV in the world.
India's Gini coefficient is 36.8
Pakistans Gini coefficient is 30.6
This means Pakistan has a lot more equal distribution of wealth. It is only a handful of megarich industrialists who are getting richer in India due to access to a 1 billion people market. India's ordinary citizen might even be worse off than the average Pakistani considering this income disparity.
Besides, India doesn't have to deal with constant bomb blasts and turmoil like we do (thanks to Afghanistan). Once this WoT is over in Afghanistan, that is when we're really gonna take off as flood gates of investors will open.
Give us 10 years and see.
Also it is going to take India 100 yeas, not 50 to catch up to developed nations if trends continue. Google it, I read it on an Indian site called Reddif.

Yeah, the CIA World Factbook lists Pakistan's GDP per capita at $2600, while India's is at $2700 (both estimates for 2007). However, we do have greater infant mortality, lower literacy rates, but let's hope GDP growth can continue and accelerate.

The GDP/capita figure I quoted are from the IMF for 2008. By 2013 India will be $400 ahead of us in terms of GDP/capita because their economy is growing at 8% and ours at 6% right now.
Once again I predict we will fall behind until 2015, but after that our economy will accelerate and we too will see growth at 8% like we did in 2005. That will allow us to catch up with India in all economic indicators as Gwadar port becomes fully operational and new investors come in after all this terrorism is over and our image improves.

if it will take us 159 years to reach that goal than why does the article says
"that the country could reach this milestone by 2050 if it maintained an annual growth rate of 8.3 per cent, and in 2100 if it maintained a growth rate of 4.9 per cent."

with the current leadership we have it wouldn't even take us 159 days to sink to the bottom of the nations economically, socially and fiscally. Not to mention what the geographic impact if any it might have.

The 159 years mark is if we progress at our current pace. The 2050 and 2100 are alternate benchmarks if our growth elevates and sustains those higher levels of growth that were given.

In our first 60 years, we have gone back wards in progress to a point where we don't have power, water, and food for the explosive increase in population. Nalaiq, and sifarshi administrators (in every freaking govt department) have no idea about planning and how to justify their job responsibilities.
Take for example, govt's stance on shortage of power.... No electronic sign boards after dark, no air conditioning till 11:00 am and then load shedding.... what does it tell you? The govt is saying to the public... "NO, NO, NO, We dont have the solution, YOU have the solution !! Reduce the use of electricity as we cannot produce any more".
Funny thing is, no one cares to wonder where these industrialized nations will stand after 159 years? I would much rather have one of these so called "industrialized nations" rule upon us rather then making our nation suffer a miserable life for another 159 years in a fantasy to stand shoulder to shoulder with our lords.

I don't trust these phony predictions. I am pretty sure that with the right leadership, Pakistan can narrow the gap within 50 years.

Paka pakaya hua khaana bohat asaan hota hai. When you keep expecting others to do something, then nothing is going to happen. Whether Pakistan gets recognized as an industrialized country in 50 years or 150 years, its not going to "become" one but will have to be "made" one, and its obviously "us Pakistanis" who have to do that. So if you want to live in a better Pakistan you have to work on it to make it a better place in the first place. If only one generation gets ready to work, and struggle for Pakistan i.e our generation, then I am sure we'll be on the right track. It sure will take some time, but just believing this figure of 159 years and losing all hope is just going to lead anyone of us absolutely nowhere.
